Moorlands parents ask to be heard in school closure review
Concerned citizens seek local coverage as all three proposed scenarios include their children's school

KENMORE, Wash., October 25, 2026 - A group of concerned citizens whose children attend Moorlands Elementary is asking local news organizations to cover Northshore School District's proposed closure of the school. The parents say their voices are not being represented or heard, and they want the district to explain how their input can change the outcome.

All three closure scenarios in the district's published Enrollment Demographics Advisory Committee (EDAC) presentation include closing Moorlands and moving students to Arrowhead and Woodmoor. The School Board has not made a final closure decision. [1-2]

For these families, the concern goes beyond a new school assignment. They fear losing daily connections with trusted teachers and staff, separating friendships and disrupting the school activities and family relationships built around Moorlands.

The group wants keeping Moorlands open to receive a fair, documented evaluation. It is asking for a comparison of feasible alternatives using the same educational requirements, clear costs and capacity assumptions, and specific plans for student services, safe travel and childcare. Parents also want substantive answers to community questions before a final decision.

The district says declining enrollment and uneven distribution of students are driving the review. EDAC's south-area rationale includes improving Arrowhead enrollment, using Woodmoor space and Arrowhead's potential for a larger future rebuild. The parents are asking reporters to examine the evidence behind that campus choice. [1-2]

EDAC is scheduled to present its recommendations at the School Board's October 26 study session at 5 p.m. Pacific. The district says no decisions will be made at that session, anticipates a final decision in early March 2027 and says changes would take effect no earlier than fall 2028. [2-3]

The group is seeking independent coverage of both the community impact and the district's explanation. Reporters should request the district's response directly from Northshore.
